After each gym, characters may be revived (even ones killed during that gym battle) and replaced with one of the Pokemon in their PC box. If a character dies, they must remain dead until the nearest gym is beaten. Because you cannot see a Pokemon's nature until after you name it, do not nickname Pokemon until you can check their nature and use the name rater.

In Gen 1 and 2, you can use a random number generator to assign each Pokemon a nature. It would help to name PC boxes after each character.
Only one Pokemon can represent a character at a time, so any additional caught Pokemon that fall under that character's category must be put in the PC. The first Pokemon you catch that matches a character's nature becomes that character.
